Bardhaman Coir Cluster, West Bengal

The cluster is in Katwa I and II community development block in Katwa Sub-Division of Purba Bardhaman district in the state of West Bengal and is spread in a radius of 25 to 30 kms covering more than 30 municipal localities. Ramdashpur, Agradwip, Akhra, Islampur in Katwa II. Bardhaman District is one of the most important commercial districts of the State with abundant natural resources. Alhough the coconut cultivation in the district is higher compared to other districts but presence of skilled workers has led to steady establishment of yarn and mat making units in late eighties. Later through organised skill training facilities in making mesh mat and corridor mats, the promising set of rural artisans are being empowered through better means of livelihood. In a day, more than 500 artisans are making these mat and financially supporting their family. Main products Coir Yarn, Mesh Mat and Corridor Mat are produced daily in cluster. The cluster is expected to produce 30 to 35% of new product items like Matting, Geo-Textiles, and value-added products in the new future and promises more varieties in different qualities
