Stories in Stone: Traditional Carving Craft of Soro, Odisha

Author: Chinmaya Kumar Nayak

Walking through the small lanes of Soro in Baleswar, Odisha, I felt as if I was stepping into an open-air museum, where every stone whispered a story, every chisel mark echoed with the rhythm of centuries past. The air was thick with dust and creativity, and rows of artisans—men, women, and sometimes even children—sat hunched over blocks of white and pink stone, their hands moving with quiet confidence and ancestral skill.

First Impressions in Soro
The first time I saw a carver shaping what would eventually become a beautiful Buddha statue, I was stunned by the sheer patience and fascination the craft demands. Unlike what most people imagine, the process is almost meditative—it begins with the selection of the perfect piece of stone, usually from local quarries. The stone is heavy and demanding, just like the stories it will one day hold.

Meeting the Artisans
What stood out the most during my visit was the sense of pride on the faces of Soro’s artisans. Most of them inherited their tools—simple, timeworn chisels, hammers, and files—from their parents or grandparents. Some belonged to local cooperatives that have survived modern competition by focusing on quality and tradition. The youngest among them were eager to show off their small creations—tiny elephants, religious figurines, and even elaborate miniature chariots—each crafted with a blend of love and frustration that only true creators know.
The Process Up Close
I watched, spellbound, as an elderly craftsman gently chipped away layers of stone, the sound rhythmic yet soothing. He explained that the soft stones—popularly pink and white—are easier to mold and ideal for delicate images, while harder stones are reserved for larger or more public icons. The work is painstaking: from rough shaping to detailed carving, followed by hours of smoothing with emery and sandpaper until each statue seems to glow with “spirit”.

Stories in Stone
The pieces themselves are a tapestry of local belief and mythology: from Ganesha idols ready for home temples to evocative depictions of Radha and Krishna, each work expresses more than just form—it tells a story handed down through generations. Even their “simple” bowls and lamps feel alive, adorned with tiny flowers and dancing figures. Everything is handmade, as if carrying a part of the artisan’s own journey.

Challenges and Hope
Yet, as one artist told me, this living heritage is not without struggle. Many young people are lured by faster, more lucrative paths, and imported, machine-made alternatives crowd the markets. Some days, the buyers are few, and the dust settles on unfinished forms. Still, a stubborn pride persists—these are not just household items or décor; they are fragments of a much older story, as enduring as the stones themselves. Strolling back towards the main road, I couldn’t help but carry a bit of Soro’s spirit with me: a deep respect for patience, tradition, and the quiet hope that, in this small Odisha town, stone will keep telling stories for generations to come.
